The Common Man

I am a common man,
Dreaming of rags to riches,
Earnestly waiting for the sight of beauty,
Looking to abscond from duty.
Waiting for a glimpse of rain,
Praying not to get wet and stain.

I am a common man,
Praying for a lottery on a daily basis,
Bribing divinity with devotion,
Losing my plot with emotion,
Invading others’ privacy,
Doing my bit for the rumour mill,
So that I am the first one to shout about it atop the hill.

I am a common man,
For I can neither  desist the fantasies
Nor can I resist human fallacies
I shall comment on elected representatives  but
I shall never be the change I want to see

I am a common man,
Craving a lifetime of attention,
Plagued by the spotlight and intention.
Waiting for opportunity to knock on my door,
While I wait outside not noticing.

Alas I am a common man rendered common by mediocrity in thought, with laziness playing a part,
Drowning the sounds of conscience and immersing myself in Individualism without originality,

I am a common man and  I shall remain thus.
